What to do after a missed sales quarter
Find out which part of the funnel failed before you change anything. A quarter misses for one of four reasons: not enough pipeline, deals that slipped, deals that were lost, or deals that shrank. Each has a different fix. Pick one or two changes you can measure within the next quarter, instead of rebuilding everything at once.
Updated
Where did the number go?
- Not enough pipeline: coverage was below plan at the start of the quarter.
- Deals slipped: they're still open, with close dates pushed into next quarter.
- Deals were lost: more losses than usual, or losses at a later stage.
- Deals shrank: they closed, but smaller than forecast.
The fix for each
- Not enough pipeline: find which sources dried up, and add or restart the ones that worked before.
- Slipped deals: check each one for a confirmed buyer, a decision process and a dated next step. Deals missing those weren't real commits.
- Lost deals: read the calls and emails, not the dropdown reason, and look for a pattern by competitor, segment or stage.
- Shrinking deals: look at discounting and scope cuts late in the cycle, and who approved them.
What to tell the board
Give the number, the cause, the one or two changes you're making, and the metric that will show whether they worked next quarter. A specific diagnosis earns more trust than a long list of initiatives.
Where agents help
The pipeline risk alert warns you during the quarter when coverage drops, instead of after it ends. The pipeline reviewer checks every open deal against your qualification method each week. The win/loss analyst reads the calls behind your losses, and the next-step nudger keeps quiet deals moving.

How do we stop it happening again?
Watch the leading signs every week: coverage against plan, deals with no next step, close dates that keep moving. A missed quarter shows up in those numbers weeks before it ends.
Should we change the sales process straight away?
Only if the diagnosis points to it. Changing the process for a pipeline problem makes things worse.
Is a missed quarter a reason to bring in AI agents?
It's a common trigger. The best first agents are the ones that address the cause you found.
