What is a GTM engineer?
A GTM engineer builds the systems behind a company's sales and marketing: data flows, enrichment, lead routing, automations and, more and more, AI agents. The role sits between RevOps and software engineering. RevOps runs and improves the systems a team already has; a GTM engineer builds what's missing.

What a GTM engineer does
- Builds enrichment that checks several data providers in turn until one returns a verified email.
- Sets up lead scoring and routing so new leads reach the right rep within minutes.
- Connects the CRM to Slack, email and other tools, so alerts and approvals reach people where they work.
- Builds AI agents for research, drafting, call notes and reporting, and keeps them working.
Skills the role needs
Most GTM engineers know one or two CRMs well, work in automation tools such as Clay, n8n or Zapier, and can connect APIs. Many write some SQL or Python, and writing prompts for AI agents is now part of the job. The role also needs commercial sense: knowing which manual job is worth automating, and which isn't.
Where the title came from
Clay popularised the title around 2023. Teams at fast-growing software companies did the same work earlier under names like growth engineer or technical RevOps.
Do you need one?
Hire one when you have a steady backlog of systems work and the time to hire well. If you need agents running sooner, or you don't have a full-time role's worth of this work yet, you can get the same capacity as a service and decide on a hire later.
Related questions
Is a GTM engineer a software engineer?
Sometimes. Some write code every day; others spend most of their time in no-code tools. Most combine tool fluency with enough scripting to connect APIs.
How is a GTM engineer different from RevOps?
RevOps runs and improves the revenue systems you have. A GTM engineer builds new ones. Small teams ask one person to do both.
What does a GTM engineer cost?
In the US, the median base salary is about $159,000 a year, according to Cargo's 2026 analysis of job postings, before benefits and other costs.
